At the end of summer 2024, while recovering from an accident that almost took me out, I threw myself into making my own sounds with my one piece of hardware: the Model:Cycles, an FM synthesizer sequencer groovebox. I started from zero in terms of production chops, spending hours alone during some rough stretches. Anything to sit alongside the tinnitus and the existential dread. During those months, I occasionally posted a few pieces. I didn’t care about perfection. Any seasoned artist might cringe at how basic and simple the work was, and at the fact that I thought it was worth sharing. Thankfully, I don’t give a fuck. I just wanted to put out these “sonic sketches” as a snapshot of what I was feeling during this time and as a marker for what my square one looked like. Some of these sketches (jams really) are muddy and may clip at times. Part of the process I guess?
Eventually, I hit a point where I wanted to explore other moods and more complex forms of production. That felt like the end of an era. I made my own sound without copying anyone or taking any shortcuts. Just me jamming on a sequencer. With that in mind, and knowing full well that Spotify has become the fast food of music, I deleted all my early releases from the app and everywhere else. I’ve compiled my favorite sketches from the past 14 months into this EP. The end of a chapter, but something small and meaningful to me.
