DJ Pitch is a producer from England. ‘Short Glow’ is an album of his music, out on OST.
It’s a statement of intent from one of London underground music’s most pivotal yet under-sung figures: an artist, promoter and label don content, typically, to facilitate and propel rather than step to the foreground. A musician whose sure-handed touch has seen him wield piston-powered club weapons, wistful singer-songwriting, and downtempo swayers with equal dexterity.
‘Short Glow’ smelts all the above to a sleekly flowing yet heartfelt alloy — the basis for purpose-built production vehicles carrying a variegated cast of collaborators. And while opener ‘Side of Your Face’ and soft-focus heartbreaker ‘Mystic Sauce’ see him ride solo, it could never be a true Pitch joint without putting on for the team.
And he rolls deep: ‘Slowly’ and ‘Wendy Step’ marry gold-flecked pads and twinkling synths to bittersweet ada loveless and Tiffi M vocals, respectively. Birmingham’s most goated Tony Bontana steps up to anchor ‘Sweetdamp’’s seasick flow, while JJ, Quiet Light, and Metoronori give voice to tunes that sigh, stretch, and lock into meditative, quicksilvery flow states.
But it’s Pazeamor-featuring closer ‘Chios’ that most encapsulates what this album is about. It’s a door flung wide, arms held aloft, soaring, rain-drenched, alive. Because for all its coursing melancholy, ‘Short Glow’ shrugs off yearning and rejects lamentation for something altogether braver: this album, like its architect, lives in hope.
