The concept of the daylight x darknight began as an experiment to merge contrasting styles–not necessarily genres–but a balance of light and dark sounds, each side exploring a different mood. It quickly evolved into something of its own. “I didn’t want to put strict parameters on what the compilation had to be and instead focused on the overall story,” says label owner Roman Martinez. “I wanted each song to feel like it was a new shade, fitting neatly into those in-between spaces of opposing sounds.”
Across the two sides, daylight x darknight moves between shimmering, melodic moments and heavier, more shadowy textures. Opening the compilation is the lush, guitar-driven“Wanton” from shoegazers Phantom Wave. Side A also includes Phoenix duo Dear Dorrit, Pittsburgh noise pop band Weird Era, Leeds lo-fi garage project Pin-Up Sisters and Boston’s Lesbiana. Side B kicks off with New York post-punk/dream pop bands doubleshot and Iceblynk Joined by Michigan-based The Photocopies, and alternative pop artist Exit Moon. daylight x darknight also features brand new and exclusive songs from navel grazr, SNAKEY DUBLAY, Lesbiana and GLICH3,
Curated by soundvsystem, the debut compilation continues its mission to champion indie artists. The result is a compilation that feels both cohesive and unpredictable, much like the scenes it pulls from.
