Sam Sala’s debut album, Diathomee, weaves together sound and visual practices, drawing conceptual inspiration from diatoms, microscopic algae that form the foundation of the marine food chain. Just as these tiny organisms reflect the fragile balance of natural ecosystems, Sam explores hypnotic, cyclical rhythms as the structural base of his sonic compositions.
Visually, the album takes cues from the phenomenon of fossilized diatoms from Central Africa, which are carried by wind currents across continents and occasionally fall over Europe as a fine “sand rain,” covering cars, streets, and cities in dust. This poetic and powerful image of environmental interconnectedness lies at the heart of Sam’s creative process.
To further deepen the experience, Sam integrates microscopic imagery captured using a portable microscope - observing the subtle transitions between natural and urban environments. These visuals are transformed into artwork and videos, expan- ding the world of Diathomee into a multisensory, audiovisual narrative.
