The world is brutal, I'm setting out to make a rhythm of it. At the heart of Avant Marbe is a deep affection for the grit of New Jack Swing's concrete rhythms juxtaposed with more abstract inspirations like Musique Concrete.
This is the mindset I took when crafting the sounds and sequencing the beats. This project is less about making something I wanted, but about making a bold statement of what I feel like electronic music needs right now, as well as producing music during a time when I needed an outlet from my reality.
The concept of Avant Marbe came to me during a trip to my hometown, Wichita Kansas. A lonely midwest city in the middle of buttcrack conservative America with a dwindling Black population and multitudes of brutal realities of late stage capitalism. My time in Wichita inspired in me a range of emotions from manic rage to euphoric nostalgia to borderline psychosis from the absurd reality that seems to plague my family.
However, in the midst of all this, I managed to do what I always do, push forward. It is here where I decided that I would Avant Marbe. The title matched my aspirations perfectly. I wanted to go further into the Avant-garde than ever before. I wanted a stark concept to be front loaded as the communication of the project.
Avant Marbe is my most intentional leap into making ambitious electronic music, as I took direct inspiration from genres like IDM, Musique Concrete, Ambient, Techno, and Industrial. I wanted to create something that can be included in the current conversation of "IDM" while also being inseparable from my Blackness.
Avant Marbe is from the street, for the streets. It's Intelligent Dance Music with hood intellect, its New Jack Swing evolved into NeoJaque, it's brutally me.
