For the past decade Alex Watts has built a career around hip-shaking rhythms, a wry sense of humour and a gift for ear worm melodies. His new EP ‘Permission’ is a collection of uncharacteristically personal songs that call to mind ‘70s singer-songwriter and vintage soul sounds, delivered with idiosyncratic flair and self awareness.
The record features members of Melbourne’s esteemed instrumental community such as Matthew Hayes (30/70), Hudson Whitlock (Surprise Chef), Jake Amy, Lewis Coleman, Darvid Thor (Karate Boogaloo) to create an intimate sound whose indie pop sensibilities are broadened with strokes of warm and lo-fi soul.
