Rouge Hill is the ambient music project of Toronto based composer and audio engineer Robert Steenkamer.
Best known for a series of releases under the name Roberto S and for a multi-decade tenure as one of Toronto's most active leftfield dance music DJs, this project signals a clear departure. While traces of earlier sounds and textures remain, Topologies abandons the metric constraints and functional expectations of the club in favour of freeform composition. The overarching concept for the Rouge Hill project is a deliberate release from genre obligations and a conscious refusal of imposed structure.
The album resists the polished uniformity of generative ambient music. Instead, it retains the looseness, noise, and irregularities of a human moving through sound and structure. The title Topologies implies complex arrangements, but also functions as a kind of spatial inquiry formed in a process of sensing and feeling one’s way through.
