On a slow and lazy afternoon, in an independent studio on the outskirts of Berlin the project folder of an unfinished ballad was left open by James Birkin. Pinkie B, waking up from the coma of a long night stumbled upon the song. He took a drag from a cigarette, and began miking the drums. After the drums, a bass line was added to the two chord piano riff. By the first signs of the evening, not only was a ballad turned into a low key disco anthem, but an idea had emerged. He took another listen and checked the time, so as not to be too late for the party. Satisfied, he leaned back on his chair, whispered “C’est Off the Hook“, and exhaled for what seemed like a long time.
On that same summer, sighing in another part of the city Yazo had just finished playing the final chord to her breezy song Tameiki, a song encapsulating a restlessness without reason, an aimless longing. She added a final melody over the soft centre to her Ode to a Sigh, and then as if waking up from a dream or a bubble she heard the city noise and realised where she was. she echoed back the sighs of the big city, sent a message to a friend, slipped on her shoes and went out dancing.
At the time, Pinkie.B was working at a bar where he met Holly, after a busy night they went out to enjoy the cool night air, they talked until dawn on a curb. It’s only when they took a different way home that Pinkie realised their fate, he went to the studio instead, and screamed into a microphone.
In early 2020 The Prince of Deptford was djing in a small club in Berlin, not quite sure in which direction his relationship was heading. it felt as if his whole being was in transit. he was always trying to Get back to You, whatever you represented – a person, a thing, an ideal. Yet despite providing the grooves of the party there was still a message that he knew he wanted or had to share.
During that summer Pinkie.B’s cousin, Alex Bong was visiting Berlin and he was going through a tough time so MrB and Pinkie were trying to cheer him up. They ended up going a bit too hard on the liquor… Fortunately, they have no recollection of it. It seems they ridiculed the concept of shame and denuded the concept of pride. For one night only they held a mirror up to humanity and said…Go Fuck Yourself
