In the early 1990s, Los Angeles drummer and composer Peter Thoegersen recorded a handful of jam sessions with pianist John Larkin, then a cocktail jazz performer, later known worldwide as Scatman John. Using a Sony DAT machine, Peter captured the sessions with bassist Bill Markus. Most of the material was relatively unremarkable, but one track stood out: Scatman goes 'spiritual jazz' mode, a mix of the mid tempo modal vamping reminiscent of Crescent era Coltrane that evolves into full-throated Kulu Sé Mama ecstasy - complete with Larkin's signature scatting that would come to make him famous - a striking performance that stands apart not only from this session but from his entire body of work.
Decades later, as Scatman John and his music are beloved quirky curios of the late 20th popular music landscape (and heavily memeified!), I came across Peter online and serendipitously learned about the tapes. Peter tracked down the original DAT and sent it to me and I transferred the recordings. That final track became the basis for the small-run record and was the first spark that eventually led to the creation of Nina, which my co-founders and I initially began working on as a novel way to release the recording.
We're releasing a one-side LP of the recording through Nina, the first physical release that will be available through the site, a function which will then become available to any artist that uses Nina.
