Buried deep in the brain, where sensory input becomes meaning, lies a cluster of neurons responsible for emotional memory formation: the place where fear and anxiety arise. Stimuli both aversive (unpleasant) and appetitive (rewarding) are processed here. Emotions originating in this “fear response center” pass through the nervous system, triggering the fight or flight response.
The daimon or daemon in ancient Greek philosophy is a neutral lesser deity or intermediary spirit. Its root is an archaic word meaning to divide, distribute, or cut. In medieval Europe, some argued that the demon was “any invisible being using reason,” categorizable into high and low orders of “good knowing ones” and “evil knowing ones.”
As invisible personifications of both fear and knowledge, demons are awakeners of aversion and appetite, perhaps unlikely allies of a self abandoned to darkness. Sometimes you only have your senses and your will to survive. Your mind is a dagger flashing in the dark, illuminating the way out.
