In the face of bleak uncertainty, fear, and loss, Evelyn’s “Surface” was birthed from the fire in her belly. Her works contribute to what she coins a “spiritual industrial revolution”. Machines, whether the computer or the drill, are the mechanisms through which capitalism extracts labor, through which capitalism exploits our bodies and our minds. Evelyn seeks to free the machine from its heartless role as labor-expoloiter, and instead collaborate with it as an instrument for the collective spiritual revolution that takes place on the dancefloor. In this way her EP is a burning fire made to liberate human bodies and ignite machines with soul. The tracks claw with sweaty force towards a future just within our grasp by reconstituting machines, subverting their purpose to create liberation and joy in the face of our dark world.
Evelyn is a force of heart and fire. With over a decade of production experience across countless genres, she’s honed her craft in service of liberating herself and others. Her relationship with machines began in Ohio working in construction, and has expanded since moving to New York three years ago to include repairing lighting and electronic equipment. Her close relationship with machines makes her particularly attuned to compose some of the city’s sweatiest, most thundering techno. The EP opens with “Colorbands”, a glittering ambient loop in which washes of sound spray out in decay – sorrowful and ecstatic. The next track, “Probe”, launches into the EP’s molten techno core; a drunken bassline accompanies flaunts from a swaying lead. “Trace” thunders forward with polymetric growls, sharp percussion accenting the hot, dense track. The EP crescendo’s with “Sever”, a haunting vocal sample and scythe-like percussion intensify above a pounding kick. The EP closes in a stunning denouement as a demolished drum loop flourishes with rich sound design and a chord progression that aches and yearns. In this closing track, “Surface” the world decays around us in agony, and we must live on and find our hope regardless.
