A lot has changed for Matthew Law since his last EP (Rumble, 2022). While many in dance music production have gone for genre specificity to feed the algorithm, the Philadelphia-born DJ/producer staple and current Brooklyn resident has doubled down on rhythmic diversity and a focus on melodic consistency. For Law, the overarching through line can be described as “Soulful Club Music,” which is more of a style and sensibility than a flat genre. With influences spanning from King Britt and Larry Heard to DJ Sega and labels like Juke Bounce Werk, he meshes thematic elements that are more relative to each other in the greater breadth of Black Dance Music than often realized.

This EP explains Matthew’s “Soulful Club Music” approach through three acts :

The first, “MATT!,” is a rhythmic offering snatched straight from the dancefloor memories of his native Philadelphia. It is a calling card of sorts, mixing hard drums and soft melody.

The second, “SHAKE,” dives deeper into his ethos by providing a vocal refrain that doubles as both a call to action and a critique on the finite nature of life. The drums speak to Law’s B-Boy sensibilities, showcasing that his particular brand of funk is very much alive and kicking.

The third and final, “PRACTICE,” is a Deep House stomper readymade for the dancers. The pitched down, almost ghostly phrase “it takes practice” can be found floating and peeking through the rhythm, encouraging the listener to grow in their creative output and movement.

This is Matthew Law’s next level, and just as his growth as a beloved DJ over the last 2 decades has proven - it’s only up from here.
