Splashes Of Colour is a return to the relaxed atmospheres that established Teen Daze as a prominent voice in electronic music some 15 years ago.
The EP begins with a slower tempo, on Shoreline: waves of white noise wash over a bouncing, inviting synth melody; whispers of an unknown language floating through the sea breeze. Orange and pink light reflect off the water, shimmers of sunset radiate through the ribbons of the cassette.
Don’t Think About It is another nod to the past; the “chill vibes” of youthful days gone by still linger, but now with a knowing melancholy. Flipping through old photographs, knowing that you can’t change what’s happened. But the song ends with a regal, optimistic melody. It’s an acceptance of the last fifteen years.
The sun has set, and pink and green lights dance in the palm trees. Strobe Dreams is our first nod to the dance music that has played such an important role in Teen Daze’s sound. But there’s a restraint here, an emphasis on texture and subtleties. A chorus of digital vocals lift up the song to the stratosphere where you’ll sit, and float for a moment, before coming back to down to the earth.
Finally, Memory Fade closes out the EP with an infectious acid line, a bouncy kick, and dancing arpeggios that are guaranteed to make your body move. The tempo is low, but maybe that’s what we all need right now. Did you know that E2-E4’s tempo is 111 bpm? Maybe take a moment to contemplate that. Anyways, is this Teen Daze version’s of a Manuel Gottsching arpeggio jam? Whatever it is, it’s working.
