The faces of the nameless flood your memory. To name is to make real , to give form to the anonymous lives that filter past each day.
Inspired by photographer Keizo Kitajima’s “European Diary”, Makhlin began to assemble the lyrics to “Valentina” while walking around the streets of San Francisco’s Richmond district, long a home for Eastern-European immigrants , imagining the hidden memories of these “familiar faces”. Makhlin, herself a first generation Russian/Ukrainian-American raised in San Francisco, excavates the silent longings of these women, estranged from their pasts staring blankly into a slate-grey future .
“Dasha lost her tears where the light doesn't touch
And Marina is looking for her soul knowing that it's not there”
