A loss function is a function that maps an event or values of one or more variables onto a real number intuitively representing some "cost" associated with the event. W. Edwards Deming and Nassim Nicholas Taleb argue that empirical reality, not precise mathematical properties, should be the sole basis for selecting loss functions, and real losses often aren’t mathematically nice and aren’t differentiable, continuous, symmetric, etc.
