Brighton quartet School Disco release the striking new album SDIV via Krautpop!.
A brooding, hypnotic collection of tracks that capture the bands unique blend of prog, psychedelic rock and krautrock, the album captures the band's most expansive, ambitious and accomplished work to date. Building their reputation for their live high-octane live shows which have seen the band tour across the UK and Europe, the band's textural, experimental and musically rich sound shines bright across the 7 tracks.
Recorded at Farm Road Studios with engineering from Jake Smallwood alongside Rory Lethbridge himself, and mastered by Harry Hayes (School Disco, Roebucks) the upcoming EP showcases some of School Disco’s most inventive and complete work to date. Mostly tracked live, with minimal overdubs, allowing its raw intensity to shine through, the album captures the bands natural musical flow, drawing inspiration from the likes of Black Sabbath, CAN, as well as sci-fi and horror, ultimately finding the in a darker, more meditative territory while also drawing from a more tender personal place than previous records.
Drifting through its distant vocals, long psychedelic instrumental breaks and splashes of fuzz heavy guitar and dappled electronics, the album brings a colourful and ever moving sphere of sounds. As comparable to Meddle era Pink Floyd as it is to Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and King Crimson, the album highlights the sheer width of the band’s sound, and the restless creativity that drives them.
Vocalist, songwriter and guitarist Rory Lethbridge explains: “We always want to step up the quality of our recording work, and as a live band that played a lot in support of our last album, ‘Denton Rock’ it was hard to figure out what direction to go in with the extended jams we had been playing. We decided to just record quickly what we had with an experienced engineer focusing on the performances but not dwelling on it too hard.
We feel like we now have an album that has a solid live performance at its base but with interesting textures, sounds, synths and production built on top of it, which helped us build some of the most expressive and textural work to date”
Following a string of tastemaker radio and press support from the likes of BBC Radio 6 Music (New Music Fix), Radio X (X-Posure), Louder Than War, Backseat Mafia, Psychedelic Baby Magazine, Dork, Shindig, Prog, Clash, Notion, Earmilk and Clunk, and having shared stages with Wolf Alice, Froth, Lime Garden, Population II (UK tour support), Bo Ningen (UK tour support), Dr. Feelgood and Frankie and the Witch Fingers, School Disco are only deepening their cult appeal.
