Somewhere between Y2K after-school chaos and DIY pop punk prophecy, Plixid happened…
Four girls from Laguja, a village in southern Estonia (population: 33)—Kadri, Tuuli, Signe, and Kaire—had known each other since birth. Under the patient guidance of their after-school music teacher Guido, Plixid was born.
Between 2005 and 2010, the girls performed at punk shows, underground music festivals, malls, and delivered an unforgettable dadaist live performance on Estonia’s morning TV show. The band dissolved before the era of social media that could have made them viral stars. Their songs were never released. Until now.
The long-lost recordings of Plixid finally resurface as a mini-album—eight songs and two remixes by Maria Minerva and Estonia’s rising hyperpop star Ines Daferrari. In the spirit of Numero Group’s X-Cetra reissue from earlier this year, Plixid reverberates with both nostalgia and discovery, giving new life to a raw sound and adolescent exuberance that nearly disappeared before it ever had a chance to be heard.
“Estonian women have been active in the punk since the very moment punk arrived in Estonia in the late 1970s, even if punk has meant different things to them in different decades. Plixid were—and still are—pure riot grrrl! Of course, we needed a band like this then, and we still need one today. Because a girl’s voice should always be heard a little more.”
— Brigitta Davidjants, Bloomsbury 33⅓–published musicologist, punk historian, and researcher at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre
“Is this punk, girl power, or unknown K Pop? No, this is growing up in the 2000s in southern Estonia, where the nearest big city is Otepää. Plixid is a footprint in the sandbox of Estonian pop. The doorframe is low, the children are gone, the only thing that remains is the groove.”
