Variable Apesar Vol. I brings about the re-inauguration of Editions Polyhymnia — a platform for work that will freely cross-contaminate between music/sound, text, and object and nurture the unexpected language through this catalysis.
The first iteration of this presents ten compositions, including three interludes, by f0ment (born Niko Raptis), written between 2022–2025. These works grew out of a tumultuous daily life comprising a long-standing art/music practice, cultural studies and the juggling act between breaking in current culture/sociopolitical tides, being a father to 3 young children and re-examining the purpose/meaning of creating.
The music itself moves on a spectrum between density and resonance, and staccato, sequence-driven exercises on the other. It is unavoidably emotional while not becoming sentimental, and aims at intensity and insistency in its structures. What emerges are works referencing neoclassical composition and several modes of synthesis, but deliberately not looking for a sense of belonging because of them. The request for attention here has little to do with the technology and techniques used while composing and producing this album, as much as it does with the unanswerable question of what is the exact feeling that elicits watching one’s children play out in the garden through the front room window and, likewise, what it feels like walking through an empty parking lot at night on the outskirts of London.
