Jayke M navigates various shades of millenium’s end electronica and idm on debut EP Hydra. Nostalgic breakbeat melodia gives way to mp3-era digital dub, stuttering beats, and serene ambience. Hydra, by its own hand, floats about 3cm off the ground. Mantra: “SH-101 forever”.
Haunting opener ‘Illuminated Mtn Path’ makes for the most structured moment on the EP, followed by ‘OSL 3108’ whose foggy club beat meanders atop a bed of digital grit, all filtered synth lines twisting in and out of existence. ‘Outer Forest’ brings a bit of a junglist-by-way-of-Floating Points vibe, with soaring jazzy synth leads over classic 808 sub bass and skittering techy breaks. Then, the mania-inducing SH-101 acid of ‘Helios’ crests perfectly into something resembling Crooks and Lovers-era Mount Kimbie, with serene looping chords and two-stepping beat. Two alternate mixes close out the EP: ‘OSL’ gets a downtempo big beat dub reconfiguration, and the listener is invited to turn inward with an ambient reimagining of ‘Outer Forest’.
Hydra releases late 2025 via digital download and on limited run CD, designed by Jayke M and handmade by Prior Self.
