Raissa Febriani began DJing underground raves in Bali after moving from her home of Bandung in West Java. Hutan Timur, Febriani’s second EP and debut for Human Pitch, follows the thread of Raissa’s evolution from DJ to producer. Scintillating rhythm science and handdrum workouts comprise the dynamic journey of the record, with hints of Gendang and Gamelan finding their way into some tracks. “These sounds are deeply rooted in my upbringing, as I grew up surrounded by them. Without even realizing it, they became a natural part of my creative process,” says Raissa.
The EP evokes the verdant environment from which it comes. Raissa spent time in Bedugul while making the record––“a vast and beautiful forest,” she describes. “I would sit there, surrounded by towering trees, listening to the sound of insects. I could see the lake and the moon and it brought back many mystical stories connected to the forest.” An ode to the forest with the club in mind Hutan Timur bridges these steamy environs, from heavier tracks like “Momachine” to the subtle and serpentine title track.
