The wormhole goes deep, doesn’t it? Gaze in a little too long, stand by a little too close, and you might just fall in. Better, instead, to listen.
Carrier is the debut release by straye, alias Kevin Ruiz, a producer and DJ based in sunny Los Angeles, California. It’s a trance-inducing trip through high-octane techno and half-time bass music, set off with rhizomatic drums and a darkly gleaming coat of prismatic sound design. It sounds like the future, but it’s built for right now—where lines between are dissolving steadily, where hybridization is the crucial marker of potency.
straye goes full-time half-time right from the go—"Ritual" is the record’s headiest track, a swirling trek through deepest space. “Close Encounters” keeps the pace, clocking down into fractalized bass-wobble banger territory. “Shapeshift” picks up the tempo for a rollicking techno scorcher complete with clattering hand drums. Afterward, “Carrier” opens the throttle to the max: a rubbery, arpeggiated bassline pulses insistently while interlocking percussion propels forward at 170 beats per minute. To close, DJ KMS hones in on the hand drums of "Shapeshift" for their aptly titled “Tribal Tool” remix—this one’s got warm deep house flair.
Formerly known as Secco, Ruiz has previously released on Gyration Station, a label and club series helmed by Trax Unit. Carrier launches on Submorph, a new label dedicated to Ruiz's own productions. Keep tabs: More is yet to come.
