Meditations is the first iteration of an ongoing exploration of queering modern modes of meditation in the digital age. This concept formed in July 2023 when I was experiencing a great deal of anxiety, and I turned to online, guided meditations to try to console my fears and anxieties that I face as a queer person.
In turning to these guided meditations, videos, and texts, I struggled to find a voice that addressed the fears and anxieties that we, as queer people, face through gender dysphoria, insecurities, self-acceptance, and coming to terms with our place in the world.
This led me to a pivotal question: 'If a queer meditation were to exist, what would it sound like?'
For cultural safety reasons, the queering of meditation in this series strictly responds to modern modes of ‘guided meditation’ in post-neoliberal, digital settings. Any creative offerings born from this series are not expressed to disrupt or dismiss any culturally significant forms of meditation that have been established over past centuries.
I would like to acknowledge that these songs were produced on the unceded lands of the Wurundjeri-Woi-Wurrung People of the Kulin Nation. Sovereignty was never ceded. Always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
Recorded and arranged in Ableton 10 using synthesizers held by the Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS), North Melbourne.
