North Carolina born and raised musician Tanner York is an endlessly enigmatic and almost puzzling character, but when he plugs his guitar into the AC30 sitting in his closet, York reveals himself in this sacred space as a budding hero of modern underground pop. He’s a compositional and recording obsessive, and plays every note on his upcoming debut album, Welcome to the Shower, out July 20th via Trash Tape. Recorded across his apartment, the studio at UNC Asheville, where he’s finishing out a music technology degree, friends’ living rooms and his parents’ attic, Welcome to the Shower (a title he defended simply because “it’s funny”) is tape-brewed power pop that subs the tiresome revivalist gimmick for the true grail: stunning songwriting with refreshing character.
