BELGIUM LIMP - SOFT SYNTH, HARD CHEESE (PV-57)
Debut full-length from Athens, GA producer Thomas Willey AKA Belgium Limp, journeying to the furthest depths of psychedelic IDM and then some. And what a debut statement it is: eight tracks recorded “in the box” over the course of some years and months up until September 2023, when Willey’s laptop “took a shit and died, and took all the project files with it.” He continues: “When I put the surviving MP3 bounces side by side, I realized they all fit together into an album. I might have tweaked them forever otherwise, but since they’re as good as they’re gonna get, I feel like it’s time to present them to the world.”
Soft Synth, Hard Cheese is one of the more impressive examples of braindance to emerge in recent memory, and fans of both PV’s Lockbox and Shabbat + Warp mainstays AFX and Autechre surely won’t be disappointed. Lush synth pads and wonky drum patterns galore: this is not only one of our favorite releases of the year, but a crowning achievement of Athens’ miniscule yet boundary-pushing electronic scene.
Certainly one to watch. Mastered by PV boss Marcel Sletten (Chairs, The Rishis).
