Atlanta singer-songwriter and prominent PV collective member Reed Winckler returns with a beautifully melancholic sophomore album. 'Happy 9' picks up where 2024's 'Gull' left off; lo-fi, home-recorded acoustic ballads carried by Winckler's gentle, often double-tracked vocals. 'Happy 9', to our ears at least, sounds darker and even more vulnerable than 'Gull', which remains one of our favorite releases in the PV catalog. This one might take the cake, though, as it feels like Winckler's most fully realized project thus far.
Kicking off with "Bend To You" and "Time I Leave A Hole" – a pair of tunes that find Winckler once again landing somewhere between Elliott Smith and Joanne Robertson – 'Happy 9' eventually has its eureka moment with the stunning "Big Dog." It's a beautiful cut worthy of comparisons to Nick Drake and Linda Perhacs, and the same goes for "Scoot," a true gem which climaxes with distorted organ swells before fading into the minimal keys-and-vocal closer "Coin Trick."
Another solid effort from one of our favorite rising songwriters. Top notch.
