A limp figure stirs atop a throne of igneous rock, overgrown in neon-mutant flora, streaked of decayed trash and fossilized detritus of past ruin. A dull beam of light from above slowly dims, then collapses upwards, dissolving into the borderless darkness above. Two thousand miles below the world’s surface, the figure jolts awake, gasping, panicked, clutching the dirt beneath them, the dust under their nails, and becomes aware a deep, warm breath hanging in the pit. Clearing the dust from their eyes, pulsing bloodrush blunts their vision. Eyes blinded scum of chimera, and the figure is marked. Booming gnarled howl strikes the cold corridor from a far off chamber, a lonely, violent pulse through crumbled concrete of a hollowed core. To be watched is to be stalked, though the blind Chimera demands its sacrifice, while denizens feed caramels to sharptoothed Cerberus.
Something’s pulsing around the corner
Another source of fear around the bend
I can feel these eyes bleeding
No peace in chaos, I cannot pretend
I pray for mercy as a foreigner
I will let this chamber rest once again
Grant me grace to find the haven
Crossing paths with what lies ahead
Every echo is a stair
Every halo is a glare
Every shadow is a lair
Every threshold leads to here
Heaven Knows The Pit I’m In is the fifth album from Los Angeles based artist/producer Chris Cubbison. An underworld allegory of desperation, fear, terror, and salvation, the album follows the nameless Amnesiac who awakens in the near-complete darkness of the underground. Shaking themselves awake, and prompted by the quickly growing howl of the the inhabitants of this underworld, the Amnesiac sets forward to find the path towards the surface and sunlight, or dig an escape from the terrors gnawing at their feet. Heaven Knows The Pit I’m In is a world that is rapidly decaying into itself. Tape hiss and manipulation, warping found sounds, and field recordings taken from multiple backpacking trips fill the cracks and shadows. What began as an ambient project ultimately tapped into neighboring systems and soundscapes: experimental electronic, techno, drum & bass, electronic punk, and more dot the tracklist, which features contributions from artists and friends, including Cubbison’s 23 Bees partner John Warlick, Josh Menashe, Seena Ratcliffe, and Michael Christy).
