'the shames' is the latest release from melbourne-based experimental group 'bodies of divine infinite and eternal spirit'. founding member daniel ward states:
“these songs were recorded at home over the last few months, each performed as the first ‘read through’ of new poems; written quickly days prior, i found briefly a few simple chords and surrendered to the rhythm already within the poems - the melodies are channeled through the words themselves as usual - what i like about this directness is that i have nowhere to hide, melodies become extensions of the immediacy of meaning making as they are the pure broadening of the poem’s language - to use the first take which i had only intended for my own guidance or a demo, i instead speak directly to you in trying to re-tell the stories which the poetry is attempting to reveal - the listener receives the purest form of the song, with its timidness and caution and its unavoidable naïve bravery, little testing melodies - and wonderfully they become long songs because the feeling is being worked out and so is meandering around and very with itself and unhurried - songs and poems often arrive somewhat complete for me and the time that follows called ‘performance’ is an act of relearning what’s been given and now there - this is why i decided not to re-record, despite its potential revisions on detail or production - in many ways i feel i will never arrive back here to this level of vulnerability and precision in articulating the thoughts - the songs are from home, they are already home, a home arrived to after tour or a long day of work while dinner cooks and brenna is tinkering or reading in the background and she lets me unwind in small trials and mumbles - they are songs about death because they are songs about living and welcoming death as it’s carrot and the beauty nestled in a non-resolution toward meaning and purpose - the rolling circle spits out and again and again and again”
