The legendary Washington D.C. post-hardcore band Fugazi famously never made shirts. That didn’t stop fans from churning out unauthorized bootlegs, though, sometimes outside of the band’s own shows. After a conversation with frontman Ian MacKaye, one Boston-based bootlegger figured out a clever workaround: a shirt that says, on the front, THIS IS NOT A FUGAZI SHIRT. The New York producer 537H’s new album tHISiSNOTa 537H aLBuM opens with a sample of MacKaye talking about bootleggers, taken from a live recording captured at some point during the band’s long run. The record, released on the great NYC label DEATHBYSHEEP, deftly uses the language of footwork and a grab bag of samples to, in the producer’s own way, engage in a bit of analysis. I hope DEATHBYSHEEP gets a copy over to Mr. MacKaye. I would love for him to write a review.
