Though the Montreal-based DJ and producer Adam Feingold has made music using multiple monikers—Ex-Terrestrial, pondlicker—his newest EP, Nothing Is A Field, is branded under his government name. It’s the first Adam Feingold release in a number of years, and it is a masterclass in what has been called “reductionist house.” For fans of 2000s microhouse or just good, textured dance music, the release will go down like a cold glass of water on an exceedingly hot day. We sent some questions over to Feingold—read our interview and listen to the EP below.

How do tracks usually start for you? In particular, on this new EP?

Adam Feingold: Sometimes I'm just processing random sounds, other times I have a clear idea of where I'm trying to go before I start. But it's always about making sounds that excite me or move me in some way. On the new EP, I'd often start with simple drum patterns that were almost just there to keep time. Everything else was then free to swirl around and play off that. 

How do you approach making music under your own name versus a moniker like ex-terrestrial?

I think there's a cyclical thing that happens, where sometimes I want to get outside myself, and other times I want to be where I am. This new record is very much rooted in and geared towards being in the body.

Are there any pieces of gear you use that you consider to be crucial to the Feingold sound?

That changes over time, but on this EP I made all the drums with NI’s Battery, and I think that really shaped the overall feel. It somehow has its own swing, like an MPC 60 or something. This was also corroborated by a friend who said the tracks feel slightly off-grid. We share the same birthday, so could just be a Pisces hallucination, but I think it's true.

Your track "Rapcha," which was made in 2018, has aged pretty well into the current electronic music landscape. What are your feelings about breakbeats in 2025?

Do you have a favorite record on Kompakt? What are your feelings about schaffel music?

“Oasis” by Dettinger. Had to look up Schaffel music. I can see it having a moment, maybe I'll give it a go.
