The great Portland-born reissue label Mississippi Records is now on Nina! The first release they have uploaded to the platform presents a perfect case study in what is so great about the label: It is a reissue of a 1976 record by the Ethiopian duo Aselefech Ashine and Getenesh Kebret, a masterwork that marks the tail end of what is known as the Ethiopian Golden Age of music. That period, which ran roughly from the 1960s until the mid-1970s, saw western jazz and pop elements merging fluidly with more traditional Ethiopian music, creating an intoxicating and singular style of music whose development was curtailed by the harsh political realities imposed by the Derg regime. Before that happened, though, ሸገኔዎች (Beauties) snuck through the door at the 11th hour, and for that we are grateful. On the record, Ashine and Kebret’s dual vocal harmonies are interwoven over a jazzy, rolling bed of music. Coming in at ten tracks, it’s something like a perfect record; we are glad it is once again available in the world.
