“Gyroscope” by The Dismemberment Plan

Once I figured out how to play this on drums I felt like a god. It’s really not that complicated but it fits the lyrical themes of the song so cleverly and subtly.

Best song you downloaded as an MP3 before the year 2012?

“Emily Kane” by Art Brut

I remember sitting on the school bus listening to this as Eddie Argos sang “I want school kids on buses singing your name,” and I was like, Hey that’s me.

Best song for staring out the window of an airplane?

“The Difference It Makes (Superpitcher Remix)” by The MFA

Just so gorgeous and lush. Actually the last time I listened to this in a similar situation was looking out at a bunch of cows and fields on a train to Glasgow.

Best song by a Pacific Northwest punk band?

“Sleeping Aides and Razor Blades” by The Exploding Hearts

Definitely more to the power pop end of the punk spectrum, but nonetheless one of my favorites. RIP.

“Something Changed” by Pulp

One of my favorite songs of all time, never mind the Britpop. The strings, Jarvis’s yelps, the Picardy third. Perfection.

Best song for grinding?

“Dial Me In” by Factory Floor

Dubby, repetitive, hypnotic. Unfortunately I mostly just grind on my own music so I don’t get to do this often.

Best song for sleeping?

“Requiem For Dying Mothers Pt. 1” by Stars of the Lid

Every time I put this on I’m like damn what a horrifying title and then BAM I’m asleep.
