What is not to love about music writers? Here at Nina Editorial, we can’t think of anything. Music writers are never annoying and always have correct opinions. But Callahan & Witscher, which features Jeff Witscher alongside Nina’s own Jack Callahan, think differently (pun intended). Here, they have penned a scathing rebuke to all the writers out there who have done them dirty. It’s called “Settle The Score,” and the pun is surely intended there, too. It extrapolates on the sound of the band’s first record, which is to say that there are breakbeats under a sunny guitar riff, the musical equivalent of a puka shell necklace swaying around a suntanned neck. It’s a taste from their forthcoming record, which will ideally be out in time for the pleasant New York City winter, when the critical discourse is always as frosty as the weather. Brick! Like a lot of this duo’s music, the end result is a meta-solipsistic feedback loop that spirals into a transcendent infinity—no beginning and no end.
