In April, the New York artist Deer park released Terra Infirma on the internet-native label D e l e t e d, a somber and dreamy record characterized by cold clarity and waves of emotional detachment. Now he is back with “Ballerina Flats,” a track that feels like it could be found among his online loosies, which more often than not, I find to be really solid. The single shows a lighter, more emotionally available side of Deer park’s palette.

The production here is warmer and less rigid than the strict, distant tone that runs through Terra Infirma. But that's not to say it isn't moody. There’s still that subtle melancholy, carried by the almost deadpan vocal delivery and semi-chalant lyrics. There is a noticeable difference in the presentation, though: the guitar loops are inviting and intoxicating, circling rap-sing vocals that linger on memory and the inevitable realization that pretending just won’t cut it anymore.
