I’m not sure where you are in the world right now, but here in New York City (The Big Apple), it’s fucking freezing! I recently came across a social media video, I wish I could remember where I saw it or who it was by, that introduced the concept of something called a “Coil walk.” The idea is pretty simple: When the weather is at its most brutal, you bundle up, put on music from the legendary industrial project Coil, and go for a long, long stroll through the urban tundra. This Monday, let me introduce a similar concept: The Gëinst walk. I came up with this derivative idea while listening to the French producer’s new EP, Hiber Trace. Spread across six tracks of expertly crafted, detail-oriented IDM, Gëinst constructs a chilly headphone universe that rewards close listening, preferably while walking. Album closer “Labyrinth” sounds exactly like its title. Lean into the chill and augment your frozen reality with Hiber Trace.
