Joon Gloom is taking the electropop revival in a different direction. Her music doesn’t quite fit into the frantic ADHDcore box. It’s more reminiscent of summer-smash R&B, the type of party music with weed-stained commercial appeal. Recent single “Joker” has buzzy synths and wistful urgency, sung with coy and coquettish confidence. It reads like a slowed and reverbed track, clouded in atmospheric end-of-the-night smog. There’s still playfulness present; there’s the lyrics “Ur so sad / U wanna be in a boy band,” for one thing. The sound of clacking heels closes everything out. It’s windows-down disorientation music.
