What does it mean for a city to be spicy? Is it a matter of temperature—cultural or otherwise? There are plenty of reasons why, say, Des Moines, Iowa, “hits different” than Stockholm, Sweden, the latter of which is home to the French producer Malibu, but we do not have time to do a compare-and-contrast between the provincial and the cosmopolitan. What we do—or, I should say, I, JB Johnson—have the time to do is to talk about Malibu’s new tune, “Spicy City.” The ambient track has an ethereal, almost religious drift to it; it seems to run against most ideas of what a fast-and-loose urban hellscape might sound like. Here, Malibu has made something useful to counter the chaos of the contemporary spicy city. Put it on and block it all out.
