The first song on the Swedish producer Oil XL’s new record features an interpolation of the bloghouse classic “Hustler” by Simian Mobile Disco; according a post on Oil XL’s Discord, Warner Music was trying to make the producer shell out a major portion of the song’s royalties for the right to execute that move—until a member of Simian Mobile Disco stepped in and said that they fucked with the tune. It’s a warranted sign of respect. The artist is one of the more consequential experimental-leaning electronic music producers of the past decade. Oil’s new project has all of the tactile, glitchy hallmarks of previous music, plus a long list of esteemed collaborators that help to push the music into a bit of a crossover space. It’s the headphone pop record of the fall!
