The Bay Area producer and DJ Kush Arora’s Only Now project is a masterclass in take-no-prisoners industrial club music, where no influence is off limits and no kick drum can be too pummeling. The grit of a good noise techno warehouse gig, the rhythmic ingenuity of gqom or footwork, the texture of Hindustani folk music, and the energy of Punjabi party tracks—all of these modes are sent through the Only Now blender. What comes out is a sustained intensity that persists even through more abstract passages. (See: “Eyes White, Vision Inside,” which is almost nine minutes of brutal industrial drift that, depending on your state of mind, will either give you a headache or cure you of your headache.) The record breaks down both genre and geography, then puts it back together with the same safety pins that the punks use to affix their Discharge patches to their battle vests.
