At a moment when song intros are trending shorter and shorter, it takes guts to release a seven-minute track as your first single, especially one where vocals are first heard four minutes and five seconds into the thing. Shaking Hand’s “Over The Coals” gives post-rock a twinkly Midwest emo flair, but the British band’s Manchester upbringing suggests that they might not even be able to point out Champaign–Urbana on a map—they could probably spot the American Football house, though. To wit, this bio describes their sound as “Tortoise, American Analog Set, and Yo La Tengo housed up in the basement of a dilapidated factory floor.” No Madchester here. Still, the music feels warmer than their industrial environment. It’s dreamy through the dreariness, and a great first introduction to an aptly named group.
