The year was 2010. A variety of chill styles were ruling the global indie blogosphere. You had your hazy, lo-fi garage rock bands. You had your post-noise hypnagogic pop acts. And then, in Europe, and especially in the wider Scandinavian religion, you had a major uptick of music that owed something to the windswept majesty of Balearic dance music. I’m thinking especially about the Swedish duo Studio here or the Gothenburg label Sincerely Yours, but there was plenty of good shit. One release that should exist in the pantheon is this EP by Helsinki’s Shine 2009. The record’s core three tracks are sophisticated and fun indie breakbeat anthems that, beyond their throwback appeal, make a whole lot of sense in our contemporary #cloudrock reality. Close your eyes and find your beach, Corona style.
