By simply writing what she knows, the Australian Catholic religious sister Sister Irene O’Connor has beaten plenty of experimental artists at their own game. Take “Fire (Luke 12:49),” the opening track from her coveted 1973 LP Fire of God's Love, recorded with Sister Marimil Lobregat and receiving reissue treatment from Freedom To Spend. Her timbre is curious and bright—a bit uncanny for a song that draws inspiration from a verse that many interpret as a decree of judgement to come. It’s a trippy hymn, with jaunty electronic organ and indelible melodies that have been remixed and sampled by admirers of all faiths. There’s shades of everyone from The Residents to Animal Collective here; it’s religious music that intuitively pushes into avant-garde territory.
