At times, the music on Everything Contest, the third release from Jasper Ewing’s project Skeleton, sounds like it could’ve been found deep in the recesses of a 2000s-era college kid’s MP3 collection, buried in a folder alongside Radiohead, Animal Collective, The Unicorns, and Aphex Twin. Here’s the thing, though: Jasper Ewing, the artist behind the project, was born in 2003. Obviously, that changes the calculus a little bit. Still, Ewing, who was raised in New York but now lives in Berlin, has a way of interjecting life into well-worn indietronica tropes, bringing his own references and experiences to the equation. The release is his first attempt at putting his voice at the forefront, and the tunes here are strong, the IDM-informed production serving to amplify the songwriting. This is music perfect for staring at a lava lamp after midnight. Keep those plastic-framed glasses on.
