Enter Tommy Fleece. The Michigan artist is making some of the most exciting electro-pop in the game right now. He writes songs about people he meets at Spencer’s Gifts and cites Lil B as a major influence. His music is crushed, catchy, and crystal clear in its intentions. When did the legend of Tommy Fleece begin?

Tommy Fleece: 02/27/2003.

Did you grow up in Michigan? Any good memories of the music scene when you were younger?

Yes, Michigan is awesome and I will die here. When I was a senior in high school, I was like thrown into the scene, I met everyone at once. Some of the best memories I have were at this office building studio right downtown. Everyone who was really about making music was in that studio all the time, like 24/7. I met some of my best friends and soldiers through that studio.

You recently released the deluxe edition of your record audio stars 2. What makes it so deluxe? How does it expand on the original record? 

I feel like as a project it’s honestly stronger and gnarlier. I’m super honored to have Reserv, Brightviolet, and rosevile sucks on it. audiostars 2 captured a really fun time in my life and the songs on the deluxe were the songs that I had the most fun around the making of them or the circumstances around them.

It makes me think of the mall and a girl that works at Spencer’s. 

Could you talk a bit about your music with The Dallas Cowboys? Why do you feel like you work so well together?

I’m a massive fan of them. I think they’re some of the last true punkers. When they asked me to do the “Scientific Progress Goes…” remix I was super hyped because I had only heard them perform the song live. They played my first out-of-state show with me and we’ve been rocking a bunch since. Dallas Cowboys are the best in the business and they’re good friends.

Who are some of your favorite 2000s electro-pop artists?

Corey Feldman, Postal Service, Death From Above 1979, Miranda Cosgrove, MSTRKRFT, ADULT., Does It Offend You, Yeah?, Metro Station, The Faint, Kesha, Brittney Spears. 

I read somewhere that you love Lil B. What is it about Lil B that is so important to you? Do you feel like he is in danger of being forgotten?

I love Lil B. His impact on culture is incredibly positive and powerful. I don’t think he can be forgotten, he has built something based off of radical positivity, love and being true. That is hard to forget.

Would you rather play Coachella or The Warped Tour?

Warped Tour. I liked when they had dirt bikes in the back, I saw it online.
