Tracey is a mysterious British musical entity with only a single EP out in the world. The EP’s cover features a back tattoo bearing the group’s name. The music itself is eclectic and ecstatic digital pop, drawing inspiration from the long timeline of British bass music—grime legend Riko Dan features on a track—alongside influences more aligned with indie and leftfield electronic music. What is the Tracey origin story?

Tracey: We’re just friends who love making music together.

Describe the Tracey sound.

Oooh okay … Sort of dark and churning at times, other times shiny and bright and uplifting! You’ve got to have the rough with the smooth. 

“Take Care” is a real anthem. What is that song about?

Thank you! The song is a dialogue between two entities that love each other deeply but are also hurting each other. They are trying to reconcile this.

How did you link up with the legendary Riko Dan for “Sex Life,” a track off of your new EP?

A mutual friend was kind enough to put us in touch. We were super grateful to have Riko’s contribution, he’s the goat.

Your EP cover is an image of someone with a Tracey lower back tattoo. What’s the story behind that? Is it real?

Yes it’s real! We took the photo a few years ago while at Hackney Carnival.

You seem to be interested in tattoos. What’s up with that other one, the logo one, that’s all over your Instagram?

That is our logo. The tattoo artist we worked with is a friend called Zac Bottoni. Definitely worth a look in, his work is super.

Who are some artists that are GOATed in the Tracey universe, and why?

Riko Dan (as we mentioned), Deee-Lite, Photek, Gangsta Boo, Timbaland, Crystal Castles, Outkast, King Crimson, Andrea Parker, Joy Division, Prefab Sprout, Gantz, Tommy Wright III, Armand Van Helden. We could go on … And why, because they all make amazing music!

What does Tracey like to do for fun? Favorite band activities?

Going to the cinema, gardening, eating nice food, exercising and laughing!
