The title “Misshapen Heart” symbolizes the state of the world for me right now. We can’t exist without the heart, of course, but it currently finds itself struggling to beat in its mishandled and malformed state.
I don’t want to suggest that this is a doomsday soundtrack, because it isn’t. But, with most of my work I think it strives at least for a degree of introspection. And sometimes what’s inside is admittedly struggling.
A couple of years ago when I was out on a very early morning walk, I came upon a man practicing bagpipes in a vacant parking lot. (Which, on its face, was a bit surreal). He was unaware of my presence as I recorded him for quite a while on my phone. A small loop of that makes up the closing track: “Unconstant Reservoir.” This loop begins with force and slowly degrades into its eventual collapse.
As it turned out, “breath” became a subtle theme over these pieces.
That man…alone in a vacant lot breathing through those pipes (presumably to no one) was an oddly beautiful moment for me.
I think, in a way, it inspired much of what came to pass on this record.
