There comes a point at which one is compelled to take stock. For Christoffer Fransson — formerly of Ultra Satan — that point has now arrived. Fransson Hill may be understood less as a project than as a condition: a controlled environment in which rock music is subjected to discipline and study rather than identity and pose. All music is, at its core, an expression of obsession. More precisely, however, Fransson Hill is a romantic record in the strictest sense of the term: formulated by an artist whose allegiance to music has been sustained over time, and tested against it. The materials of a lifetime in rock are re-examined and reassembled. When the opening track "Shit City" begins, the clock is reset to zero, and life appears again without prescribed limit.
