π˜“π˜’π˜―π˜₯𝘴𝘀𝘒𝘱𝘦 π˜•π˜°π˜°π˜― 𝘚𝘡𝘢π˜₯π˜ͺ𝘦𝘴, the latest work from Latent Sonorities' initiator and co-curator, Morgan Sully, aka Memeshift.
With π˜“π˜’π˜―π˜₯𝘴𝘀𝘒𝘱𝘦 π˜•π˜°π˜°π˜― 𝘚𝘡𝘢π˜₯π˜ͺ𝘦𝘴, Morgan again contends with abstraction and materiality, this time distilling the latent sonority of Landscape’s divine Noon passive (unpowered) analog drum/drone synthesiser.
Analog circuits within the device are powered only momentarily by incoming gate/control voltage signals which cause them to oscillate and writhe unexpectedly. Uniquely, channels can be joined by touchplates where the signals fuse, grow, and electrify one another in complex, living ways. Momentary power fluctuations by Noon's stochastic instability result in organic textures from its analog circuits that echo a circuit bent ferality under digital control by the messy fingers of Memeshift.
"These are a small selection of tracks that are more like 'studies' in post-processing of the wonderful Landscape Noon. My workflow is basically triggering the sonority of the Noon with a MIDI-to-CV converter and recording its output into my DAW. I then slice this audio back into new MIDI tracks in Ableton; this divides the audio into chunks which are assigned to single MIDI notes. Once these are assigned to MIDI notes, I can then re-sequence (sometimes in smaller lengths) these MIDI loops and assign various Macro parameters allowing me to surgically provoke the timbre and shape of each individual note. I often randomize these in a dialogue with the parameters until I find textures or suggestions of a groove or melody that 'feels right' within this ergodic flow."
Like his most recent solo release - π˜—π˜©π˜°π˜―π˜¦ π˜™π˜¦π˜€π˜°π˜³π˜₯π˜ͺ𝘯𝘨𝘴 - this release continues Morgan's research into developing succinct statements, across a variety of musical languages, cultivated within Berlin's thriving milieux of improvised, club experimentalism.
