Avizohar's Études for Haunted Pianos is the outcome of exploring old, broken pianos while experimenting with equal temperament. The recording sessions of improvisation on the off-kilter instruments captured their idiosyncratic characteristics, colors, malfunctions, and detuned states.
Approaching the compositions from a micro-tonal perspective, the focus is on sounding the spectral habitat of the instruments. Avizohar further manipulates these detuned systems through digital processing, inducing an artificial sonic environment of convoluted textures, harmonic and inharmonic overtones, and odd-timbre waveforms of augmented decays.
Originally premiered as a site-specific performance during Maya Dunietz's exhibition 'Five Chilling Mammoths,' Avizohar amplified the Études through Dunietz's system utilizing transducer butt-kickers mounted on the backs of the pianos. This provoked the instruments to echo their memories and specters. The result is a submersion of awakened pianos, offering the listener a view into their haunting sound-world.
Special thanks to Maya Dunietz, Yuval Frisch, and Tamari Goddard.
Recorded in 2020-2021 at Studiobank, Tel Aviv, and live at The Artists Residence, Herzliya, as part of Maya Dunietz's exhibition 'Five Chilling Mammoths'.
