Our first (traditional) drop out the ◢sidehatch. is Santa Fe based chandler baxter tipton’s expansive LP “YICOLAS”. So much can be said about this record: this is frenetic drill n bass but groovy, juke adjacent, hip hop aware, experimental af pre/post/mid rave bangers. I’m reminded of an interview André 3000 did where he said of Squarepusher it was like someone had cracked a computer open and the tunes had leaked out. Or something like that.

I say expansive because over 19 tracks (but at a lean 45 minutes) tipton really gives us a broad taste of his ability, vision, and range. It’s really heartstopping stuff - often on the edge of overwhelming but then a gorgeous beach side cocktail sipping sample swoops in or some funky bit of beautiful synth lead craft reminds us we’re here to get down.

Fans of Duran Duran Duran should have a lot to love here and in many ways this is a beautiful answer to this year’s “Supernatural Beast City” - but where that record takes cues from twinges of inner and outer darknesses, YICOLAS has little such shaded hues in its palette. These are vibrant broad stroke pastels, painted by a master who you have no business not knowing about.

Get involved, grab a refreshing bevvie, if it’s spiked a bit strong so be it, and come say hi to “YICOLAS”
