'Umbra Lumen Tonos’ (2024, glint music) is the debut solo EP for CJ Calderwood as a solo artist. It delves into their explorations of texture, tone and destruction and shines a spot light on the raw edges of the 7 tracks.
The title refers to a renaissance drawing method for rendering shadow (umbra), light (Lumen), and ‘Tonos’ which is a darker line between light and shade which doesn’t exist in nature but helps to articulate a drawing.
The record was largely arranged over the period of a year whilst CJ was receiving medical treatment for a tumour which is reflected in the challenging music presented. Filled with moments of uncompromising atonality punctuated by windows of delicate, heartfelt melody bandaged in sellotape yet staying the course.

CJ Calderwood (b.1992 they/them) is a multi disciplinary artist working across music, and visual mediums. Alongside their solo music as ‘CJ Calderwood’ they are also a member of the band ‘Good Sad Happy Bad’ as well as the electronic duo ‘Lol K’ whose recent album ‘Climbing/Holding/Falling' was released July 2024 via label Halcyon Veil.
